Four years ago, I made a harrowing choice. Despite a lifetime of creating spreadsheets, no writing experience outside of Instagram captions, and only 25 subscribers to my name (most of whom were blood relatives), I decided that I would become a writer.

Now, I’m publishing two full essays a week to an audience of over 75,000 people. Since I started publishing online, I’ve reached number one on Hacker News multiple times, written cover articles for magazines, and been read by my heroes. Going from no experience and no skills to this outcome has only been possible with one thing: AI.

Large language models are a gift. They are not replacements for creativity or skill as some have feared—they’re amplifiers of ambition. You can create better work, faster.

I use AI tools to generate ideas, conduct research, revise sentences, and workshop headlines. Nothing can replace what I do as a writer, but AI empowers me to do each aspect of my work faster and better.

I’m not the only one who has benefited from using them. Every has launched multiple software products, publishes an original essay every day, and hosted several courses—all with a full-time staff of fewer than 10 people.

Not only are we doing all of this with a small staff, we’re turning what we learn into products. We’ve incubated Lex, an AI-powered word processor, and Spiral, a powerful prompt builder that can automate 80 percent of repeat writing, thinking, and creative tasks.

Now we’re combining the best of what we know about both writing and building AI products into one class, How to Write With AI. It’ll teach you how the foundations of online writing and new AI tools go hand in hand. You’ll learn how to use ChatGPT to conduct research and explore ideas. From there you’ll learn how to write with Claude. After you have a draft, you’ll learn to edit it in Lex. Finally, you’ll learn how to distribute your ideas with Spiral.

Get ready for the most creative month of your life.

Why writing is the key to success

All great progress starts with writing.

Whether you want to build a reality-warping product, start a world-changing company, or simply find perspective, the first step is being able to write a good sentence.

Large language models are the biggest change in writing—ever—but they are not silver bullets or magic pills. Writing is still hard. Greatness will always require sacrifice. AI doesn’t just write the perfect sentence for you.

What AI does do is make it possible to focus only on the great stuff. If you know what you’re doing, you can automate the rote details and jump straight to expressing your most important thoughts.

That’s why I’m so excited to teach this class: It’ll give you the skills necessary to make incredible writing.

Why this course will help you win

How to Write With AI consists of five elements:

  1. Four (4) live lectures on writing principles, followed by a hands-on workshop of an AI tool that can help you achieve your goals faster

  4. 30 days of quick, 10-minute writing exercises to help you improve—fast

The tools

We’ll do hands-on workshops with the following AI tools:

ChatGPT: While you’ve almost certainly tried this tool in the past, it has improved significantly over the last six months. There is no better software to have as a thought partner—it’ll easily hold a conversation, dive deep into a topic, and help you better understand your psyche.

Claude: Anthropic’s models are incredible at writing. We’ll show how to take rough ideas you generated with ChatGPT and turn those into rough drafts. It can’t write an entire essay, but it’ll take you closer than you think.

Lex: Lex is a word processor with AI-powered editing tools that makes it easy to produce consistently great writing. You’ll learn how to use Lex to take those rough drafts produced in Claude and then refine those, over and over again, until every word on the page shines.

Spiral: Spiral is a prompt builder that automates 80 percent of any repeat writing, thinking, or decision-making task. You’ll learn how to transform your essay into a tweet and LinkedIn post, and get readers interested in your writing.

The details

What is the curriculum?

How to Write With AI will be structured as follows:

Week 1: The power of taste

We’ll discuss what taste means in writing and how to discover your own taste. You’ll hear directly from Every cofounder and CEO Dan Shipper about how he uses ChatGPT to cultivate his taste, and learn how to use ChatGPT to examine and improve your own.

Week 2: The importance of topic selection

We’ll examine how to conduct research that fosters original thought and how to utilize a note-taking system that works for you. You’ll learn how to use Claude to translate rough notes into a picture-perfect outline.

Week 3: The hard work of craft

We’ll discuss the importance of editing, what makes an essay go viral, and how to write with your own voice. You’ll hear directly from Every cofounder and Lex CEO Nathan Baschez and learn how to use document editors like Lex to edit faster.

Week 4: Finding an audience

We’ll explore how to expand a tweet into an essay, and provide an overview of distribution options (and how to get started). You’ll share your essay to Every’s 75,000-plus readers (if you so choose), and learn how to use Spiral to transform your essays into hooks too tempting for readers to resist.

Who will we learn from?

I’ll be your weekly lecturer and will be doing the daily exercises right alongside you. Your editors will all be trained in our methods and style. I’ll also bring in guest lecturers from the extended Every universe, like CEO and cofounder Dan Shipper and cofounder and Lex CEO Nathan Baschez

Four weeks starting on September 19 at 12 p.m. EDT and ending on October 24. Each weekly lecture will take 1.5 hours. Between these lectures, there will be daily writing exercises delivered via our Discord server, where you can chat with your writing group and your editor.
