Why I Use Muse: a Visual Tool for Deep Work
By Dan Shipper
There are a lot of options out there for taking notes and synthesizing information. I’ve tried them all. But for me, the only one that’s really stuck is Muse. I use it every day. It’s the app I open when I need a place to read, organize, and synthesize the information that I turn into the writing I do at Every.
Here’s how Muse works:

Why I Use Muse: a Visual Tool for Deep Work
By Dan Shipper
There are a lot of options out there for taking notes and synthesizing information. I’ve tried them all. But for me, the only one that’s really stuck is Muse. I use it every day. It’s the app I open when I need a place to read, organize, and synthesize the information that I turn into the writing I do at Every.
Here’s how Muse works:
When you open the app, you see a board, which is an infinite 2-dimensional canvas for text, images, words, and links. Boards can be nested within boards, which gives you an infinite space to organize ideas.
For example, here’s the board I created to help me write a recent piece about Rob Burbea’s book, Seeing that Frees:
(And here’s a link to a video in case you want to see more details.)The cool thing about boards in Muse is they’re kind of like if Figma had a sibling that was made just for notetaking. There’s something about seeing ideas laid out visually in a combination of images, text, and handwriting that helps me understand things more clearly.
When I use it regularly, Muse becomes something like an art gallery for everything in my mind. All of the important ideas are on display—easily found, referenceable, and synthesized. I find that I am able to remember information I keep in Muse much better than in other apps, precisely because of this visual organization. I think it works by the same principles that make memory palaces so effective—but requires none of the effort.
Most productivity apps are not like this. Too much of the software I use day to day is noisy and distracting. Muse is different. It’s made by people who care about the craft of software, and who take seriously the idea that technology should be a tool for thinking.
That’s why I’m so excited that we get to offer Muse for free to you.
If it’s something you’re curious about, make sure you do it this week. Muse is offering this for our subscribers until Thursday, October 6th at midnight. If you want to claim access here's all you have to do:
