What forking means

Forking means taking a copy of an existing codebase and developing it as your own. VS Code’s code is open source, so anyone can do this.

Cursor and Windsurf both began as forks of VS Code: They started from Microsoft’s working editor and built their AI features on top, rather than writing an editor from scratch.
